Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
