Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
