Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh game mode called Relaxed Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but includes several key adjustments:

  • Each team has just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities done by human gamers grant complete experience points, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
  • Just a pair of maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.

In short, the playlist delivers on its title: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides more options for gamers seeking alternative methods to enjoy the game. However, if video games have taught us anything, it is that not everyone will be happy. In other words, a lot of BF6 fans are upset.

Community Responses: From Fury to Support

"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," states a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and another lists all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this bot mode."

On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," reads one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are players who have lives and don't play this title 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply via social media clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Criticisms and Player Feedback

Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase wait times more extended for other modes due to the large amount of options currently available. Similarly, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Finally, a major complaints is that a previous feature was promised to provide full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base meeting them in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this mode as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I had so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
