Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in defense or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to defend and defend this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the statutes or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Response
The clip reportedly trigger a angry response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our United States with great national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and retract his violent language before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.
Officials' Firm Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We are veterans and security experts who care for this nation and made an oath to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and condemn the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the death of elected officials."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the government advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that's unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the official stated. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
