For the Store Clerk Who Made Me Totally Wordless – I Salute You
This occurred on a day of rest, and I found myself grumpy enough, refueling my mum’s car. The location was one of those petrol stations that operates as a convenience store, so you run the risk of joining a queue customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. It's an awful situation to occur when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Terrible.
My position was fourth in the waiting line. There was only employee working, a youthful clerk. Something stood out in her demeanor. After the ditherer at the front of the queue had finally paid for his purchases, his pastry, and his box of eggs, I was certain that I heard the cashier tell him to have a great day. Unusual. Maybe it was a mistake, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if she could even be an ally in the war on delays, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down people just getting gas like me.
I moved up, now third in line. The person ahead of our group finished pumping gas with commendable speed. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. Someone from the US? At this location? The pronunciation indicated it, and few locals says to others those exact words, or simply a good day. Very rare. Rarely does one encounter many Americans frequenting this area, least of all working in petrol stations or elsewhere.
Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper embroiled in a protracted effort with her carryall, her groceries, her purse and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. Once completed, she as well received the wish a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. I might have verified it by cracking a joke to her, to see if she did that thing as they gaze at you, without a smile, and state very earnestly: “You are very amusing.” However, nothing occurred of a jest to utter.
I just had to settle the genuine warmth – or a performance of it, essentially the same as the same thing – while she stared me right in the eye, piercingly, and told me a wonderful day. My spirits lifted. Beneficial indeed.
