Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He fought the legal system and the legal system prevailed.
A couple of months after being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.
Imminent Imprisonment
The adjudicated plotter – who has been subject to home confinement in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the coming days, amid growing rumors that he will be sent to a well-known top-security facility.
Historical Statements on Prisoners
During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right former soldier showed minimal sympathy for the country's prison population.
“For what reason must we offer those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”
Incarceration Location Debate
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week toured the facility in an obvious attempt to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he expected the 70-year-old politician to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is very grave. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of prison meals.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells accommodating 40 inmates: “That’s practically one square metre per inmate.
“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, of course, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.
Allies Speak Out
He is not the only voice expressing views prior to the former president’s anticipated detention.
Penning in a major publication, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the largest unfairness in its past”.
“This is an injustice that erodes the souls of countless people in Brazil,” he stated.
Divided Public Response
This could be accurate considering the significant following Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. But his predicted imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of millions individuals who think he should be jailed for conspiring to stop the incoming president from becoming president – and also scheming to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a politician for the incumbent president's Workers’ party, stated: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain proper handling – but respectful treatment behind bars. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the tough conditions of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently asserted that basic rights are not for lawbreakers – decided to tour a prison to learn what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, insulting conduct”.
Possible Jail Facilities
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now holds about thousands of detainees, his more likely destination appears to be a adjacent penitentiary for officers and other “particular” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
Its cells are much more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while occupying the spectacular presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.
According to information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a shower and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and also a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report indicated.
Political Reactions
Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
