King to Share Intimate Message on His Health Battle in Nationwide Broadcast
The Monarch has recorded a first-hand account concerning his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer drive, run by medical research organisations and a major network.
The royal household confirmed the King would talk about his "path to recovery" as a cancer patient, in a televised statement on Friday evening at the evening slot.
The message, filmed within Clarence House a fortnight ago, will highlight the vital significance of preventative health checks to increase the likelihood more people diagnose the disease at an treatable phase.
This represents a rare update on the wellbeing of the Monarch, who has been receiving ongoing care since the news was shared in early last year. But it is thought doubtful the King will specify his type of cancer.
Fundraising Primary Goal
The awareness initiative each year raises funds for medical research and therapies and encourages people to get check-ups to improve the chances of an timely detection.
The King's relative openness about his condition, and his experience as a patient, has been aimed to promote education and to persuade more people to get checked - and this will be taken a step further with this exceptional royal involvement.
Up until now the King's main approach to his cancer has been to keep working, upholding a hectic timetable alongside his ongoing course of treatment, and he is understood not to have wanted to be defined by his illness.
The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, undertaking several international tours, notably to Italy and Canada, and receiving the biggest number of official guests to the UK for almost 40 years, including the German president in recent days.
Friday's Broadcast Event
The upcoming Stand Up to Cancer show on Channel 4, hosted by presenters like Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will encourage people not to be scared of getting cancer checks.
Each presenter have been personally touched by cancer - Davina McCall said recently she had received treatment for the disease, while Balding was treated for the illness over a decade ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously mentioned his late father, who had a diagnosis and then later another illness.
The programme will appeal to the estimated 9m people in the UK who Cancer Research UK estimate are not up to date with public health checks, with an online checker to let people determine if they are qualified for screenings for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.
In an attempt to demystify screenings and show the value of timely identification there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at two Cambridge hospitals in Cambridge.
"I want to take the fear from cancer screening and show all people that they are not on their own in this," stated one of the hosts.
Understanding Health Checks
Right now in the UK, there are several key NHS cancer screening programmes - for specific cancers - available to specific demographics.
A recently launched lung cancer screening programme is also being phased in for individuals at high risk of contracting the disease, specifically targeting people in a specific age bracket, who have a smoking history or have smoked in the past.
Individuals may discuss prostate cancer checks, but there is not a universal scheme in place.
Charitable Impact
The charity project, which has generated £113m over the past decade, is supporting 73 research studies with thousands of patients.
King Charles, in a address for dignitaries at a gathering for cancer charities in the spring, had referred to recognising the "daunting and at times frightening experience" for cancer sufferers and their families.
But he said his experience of managing cancer had shown him that "the darkest moments of illness can be alleviated by the greatest compassion," as he commended those who looked after cancer patients.
Official sources has not revealed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has received. The King's cancer was discovered following he had received a routine operation.
