Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
