Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.

An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved series.

"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Excitement Abound

While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.

Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
