UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
