Christopher Nolan's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, stands as a movie audiences have been anticipating ever since it was revealed. It easily ranks as one of the most awaited motion pictures coming next year. In a festive surprise, a trailer has finally arrived, even if it's compromised due to the platform's low-quality encoding—perhaps explaining the director's choice to restrict the preview exclusive to cinemas.
The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast
The debut footage reveals Matt Damon in the role of the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland playing the son alongside Anne Hathaway depicting the loyal wife. In a poignant moment, Penelope asks Odysseus to promise his safe homecoming, to which he look up and question what happens if he cannot. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock Odysseus and his crew steal during their arduous journey.
Adapted from a foundational pillar in classic storytelling, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest of the legendary King of Ithaca. Following his victory at Troy, as told within the companion epic, the king faces an extended and hazardous return to his homeland.
Mythical Encounters and a Star-Studded Lineup
On his travels, Odysseus confronts countless challenges and mythical beings. This roster features the enchantress Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, and the deceptive Sirens. Despite these trials, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to get back to his wife and son in Ithaca.
The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway is Charlize Theron portraying the shrewd goddess, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
The classic poem has seen many reinterpretations throughout history. These range from contemporary versions and a late-90s dance production. It has even been adapted into a musical called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a multi-part album series.
The official trailer was long awaited since the film's announcement and a short teaser clip which was initially shown only on the big screen. That footage later made its way onto the internet shortly thereafter.
