What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
