What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Cavern
After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
