Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's renowned youth academy.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.
After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
